On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, a cooking class was held at the World Kitchen of Teikyo Language Commons (Telaco), a language learning facility on the Teikyo University Hachioji Campus.
This event is held at Telaco once a month, and the menu often features home-style dishes related to the home countries of the native tutors who are Telaco staff members. This time, Mariam, a tutor from Georgia, demonstrated recipes for Khachapuri, a Georgian dish made by wrapping cheese in puff pastry and baking it in the oven, and Nigziani Badrijani, made by wrapping walnut paste around baked eggplant that has been sliced lengthwise.
The 15 students who participated were divided into three groups and began cooking using recipes that had been distributed in advance, working together to complete several steps, such as baking the eggplant, wrapping cheese in pie crust, and frying the walnuts and blending them in a mixer. For students who were not familiar with Georgian cuisine, it was difficult to proceed with the cooking without being able to visualize the final dish, but Mariam gave them accurate advice in English, and they were able to successfully complete two dishes. The participating students shared their impressions of the finished dishes while eating them, providing an opportunity to engage with the language while having fun.
In addition to this event, Telaco regularly holds pronunciation clinics and events that allow students to experience different cultures, and will continue to support students who wish to improve their language skills.
